    Design Code Creativity Passion

Hi, my name is Kris Hedges, I'm a designer in Columbus, Ohio and InkSpeck Design is my little spot on the web. I love to spend my time creating fresh and beautifully designed experiences. I believe, that in order to create, creativity is required. Creativity is brought on by inspiration and inspiration only comes when you love what you're doing. I love what I do. Take a look at some recent work of mine by browsing through this portfolio or for more information about who I am, take a look at the overview. Also check out the blog for further examples of my work and follow along with all of my latest experiments and varied creative endeavors.

I worked very closely with some of the great people over at Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District to design a new logo, identity guidelines, and new website built on top of a CMS. They have been very pleased with the results and so was I.

It was a real pleasure working with Amanda to design her new logo and website, considering she already had so many beautiful images to work from and be inspired by. She was looking for a clean and elegant site to display user-friendly galleries and her blog.

Sierra Club Ohio Chapter - Web Design Home

I worked with the Sierra Club Ohio Chapter to design a fresh look, while also creating an inviting space where visitors can get the latest news, make a donation, write letters to elected officials, or find out about other actions they can take. Work continues with this project as several of the local Sierra Club groups throughout the state are beginning to transition to their own CMS systems under subdomains of this State Chapter site.

Central Ohio Rain Garden Initiative - Web Design

The Central Ohio Rain Garden Initiative approached me to create a website that they could use to promote and keep track of rain garden installations around central Ohio. This, after the rain clean, design helped boost their visibility and the rain garden submission forms and mapping abilities has helped them to meet their grant goals. I had an absolute blast creating this site.

    Mandlebrot Cathedral 1

This is a series of desktop wallpaper designs I created, by first generating these wonderfully organic two color shapes from a mandlebrot fractal generator. I would then take those bits of images, stitch them together, and through even further manipulation in PhotoShop and Illustrator use them to create these strange and colorful scapes.

    Ruxtape - Admin

Ruxtape is a tiny web application for creating and sharing mixtapes. It’s built on top of the camping micro-framework (Ruby). As a contributor to this project, I leveraged Haml/Sass, jQuery, and the fantastic SoundManager 2 library to create the audio player page design, the user administration screen design, and created a logo for the project.

For more information about this project please visit my github page.

Or for a simplified and more current version, check out the re-write I created with Sinatra called “Suxtape“.

  • “Four O’clock”

The Alarm Clock - Vector Illustration

The Alarm Clock - Vector Illustration

These two all vector illustrations accompany a short “Twilight Zone” story called Four o’clock. The story is a tense melodrama in which a man, Oliver Crangle, is obsessed with snooping on people he deems “evil”. Finally, he devises a plan to shrink every “evil” person down to two ft. tall at four o’clock. Unfortunately, Crangle finds himself looking up at his pet parrot in disbelief as the time arrives.

The story is tense and frenetic. I wanted to capture the mood of the room and allow the reader to just imagine to see the world through Crangle’s eyes. I decided to go with one illustration mid-story, where the main character is watching the clock, imagining it’s four o’clock, his foul plan underway and a second illustration for the end as the parrot screeches in surprise when Crangle shrinks out of view.

CSS Dock Clone

While, playing around with some CSS3 transitions I came up with a pretty cool little dock clone. I’m sure there’s some refactoring that can be done, sure you could use javascript for more cross-browser compatibility, you could even use CSS3 Transforms for the scaling effects, but I just wanted to sit down with CSS3 transitions alone to familiarize myself with them more and to see what could be accomplished with them.

An Angry Old Man

An Angry Old Man

In this world of digital art, with its infinite levels of undo, pixel precise bezier curves, opacity masks, and slick vector smoothness it’s nice to sit down and just draw. Remember? Draw? Just like we all used to do back in art class.
